Commentary by Shaheera Asante After decades of Africans (residing on the continent, out of it ...

Commentary by Shaheera Asante

After decades of Africans (residing on the continent, out of it or a creative combination of both) – who have had to remind the geographical ignorant that Africa is in fact a continent and not a country; maybe a change in perspective is needed.

Ironically, Africa thinking and treating itself as ‘one country or nation’ would be its best advantage as a future global power-house economy.

The rise and rise of Africa’s economic muscle has precipitated a stream of foreign investments, daily economic analysis, news editorials and speedily published books predicting Africa’s future; including the most recent and talked about “The Fastest Billion – The Story Behind Africa’s Economic Revolution” penned by Charles Robertson with his colleagues at Renaissance Bank.

In his book, Mr Robertson states that the fastest billion will be the “last phase of a global economic transformation that began over 200 years ago” in which Africa will be the last beneficiary of this cycle. He writes “Africa’s most remarkable progress will occur in the next two generations and Africa’s GDP will increase from 2 trillion as it is now, to 29 trillion (in today’s money) by 2050”.

With such a brilliant and prosperous future ahead, where does this leave Africa ‘as a collective’ – in terms of retaining and controlling its own economic successes? will only a handful of the most entrepreneurial countries lead the economic new frontier whilst others struggle to catch up, or shall the continued rush of foreign investment into African start ups, see their product patents and profits go out of the continent – funding new yachts floating around a slew of US or Caribbean private Islands?.

I believe Africa has an abundance of talent, innovation and energy emitting from a new generation of like-minded entrepreneurs, who now, need to incorporate within their vision and business plans an Africa-wide perspective; they need to get beyond the present ‘single country’ mentality and develop cross-border partnerships that will benefit Africa’s economy and people as a whole.

Africans must not only be users and consumers of technology, but makers of it also, with patent rights intact.

Importantly we must now plant the seeds in the minds of our budding next generation of consumers and innovators a ‘Made in Africa’ brand loyalty.

Kenyan entrepreneur Mike Macharia CEO of Seven Seas Technologies (SST), one of East Africa’s leading technology solutions companies, sums this up brilliantly in a recent article in How We Made It In Africa.

Macharia says “My vision has expanded on a radically global scale. I don’t sit down and think about Kenya only, as was previously the case. I have re-energised my passion and consider myself an African entrepreneur”. He adds “The Chinese look at Africa from this continent-wide perspective with a view to consolidating opportunities and combining resources. We need to stop compartmentalising countries and looking at Kenya on its own, Uganda on its own, and so on. It would be significantly value adding all-round to find solutions that address African problems as a whole,” advises Macharia. Read the full article here.

Sub-Saharan Africa’s current population is 856m (more than Europe’s and a fifth of Asia’s), which is predicted by the UN to reach three times the size of Europe by 2050.

Currently technology innovation hubs are springing up in almost every nation, a new generation of creators, innovators, movers and shakers abound, so there’s plenty of pie for everyone in terms of a slice of sub-Saharan Africa’s astounding mass market share, and as a result, job creation and self-sufficiency are surely the gentlest weapons to eliminate poverty on the continent and make our ancestors dance with joy.

GSMA and Deloitte release comprehensive research into the impact of mobile telephony on economic growth. Mobile offers unprecedented economic growth opportunity globally.

GSMA and Deloitte release comprehensive research into the impact of mobile telephony on economic growth

Mobile offers unprecedented economic growth opportunity globally.

Last week the GSMA and Deloitte released the first comprehensive assessment of the incremental benefits of next-generation mobile telephony services, such as 3G technology and mobile data services, and their impact on economic growth.

The report ‘What Is the Impact of Mobile Telephony on Economic Growth?’ provides the first estimates of the impact of mobile data usage on GDP growth in developed and developing markets. The report draws from research of data usage and economic growth across 14 countries provided by Cisco Systems based on their Visual Networking Index (VNI), as well as Deloitte studies on the productivity impact of mobile in 79 countries and the impact of 3G penetration across 96 countries.

Chris Williams, Deloitte telecommunications partner comments: “The development of data services have the potential to drive economic development in the same way in which voice services have in previous generations. This report offers the first serious quantification of this impact and confirms industry expectations that the impact is significant. Policy makers need to consider the implications of this report in their support for the development of mobile data.”

Key findings of the report include:

A doubling of mobile data use leads to an increase of 0.5 percentage points in the GDP per capita growth rate across the 14 countries;

Countries characterised by a higher level of data usage per 3G connection have seen an increase in their GDP per capita growth of up to 1.4 percentage points;

NYOTA MEDIA the world’s first communication and PR agency for African innovation has launched.

For Immediate Release

African Innovation Communication Agency launches

London/Nairobi – 5/12/2012

NYOTA MEDIA – the world’s first communication and PR agency for innovative African entrepreneurs, start-ups, and international companies that use technology to improve the lives of Africans, has launched.

Based in London with its office in Nairobi opening in the new year, NYOTA MEDIA will focus on marketing, media, and brand development for African innovation companies.

On a daily basis, media headlines report on how mobile apps are used to improve and progress the life of Africans; from health, education, agriculture, green tech and commerce to fashion, games and entertainment. Africa’s image within the global media has positively improved.

“In the past 5 years the image and perception of Africa in the western media has changed beyond recognition to be the most innovative and exciting place to be, and rightly so” says NYOTA MEDIA’s Founding Partner and former BBC Journalist Shaheera Asante.

Currently, 7 out of 10 African countries (Ethiopia, Mozambique, Tanzania, DR Congo, Ghana, Zambia and Nigeria) are currently in the fastest growing economies on the planet for the coming years with an average GDP growth rate of about 7 percent or more. These countries have a combined population of 424M people.

“Long gone, thankfully, are the daily news feeds of war, poverty, starvation or corruption which was the only news reported on Africa by the very same media, who are now rushing to get the latest African innovation scopes and blog feeds – the progressive and brighter side of Africa was often ignored” adds Asante.

Mobile Strategist and Founding Partner of Nyota Media, Rudy De Waele comments “2012 has been a breakthrough year for innovative projects and mobile/technology startups in Africa. We’re entering an incredible prosperous time of market development, using innovation and mobile technology on the continent, The elements needed to create a healthy ecosystem which allows entrepreneurs and startups to grow in this area are coming together” says De Waele.

NYOTA MEDIA’s founding partners are well-connected within the international technology media and the African innovation scene, and have recognised the need to support effective communication and PR strategies in this growing sector on the continent.

For its launch NYOTA MEDIA has released today its presentation on Mobile Opportunities in Africa – Engaging with the next billion which was curated and presented by Rudy De Waele recently at the ForumOxford Mobile Apps and Technologies Conference 2013, at Oxford University.

Follow @nyotamedia on Twitter for regular updates on our activities and news on innovation in Africa.

In addition we are offering one day a week free services to young African innovations – this is an initiative to assist up and coming projects on the continent with their PR and Communications when often their budget does not allow.

Ends

Transforming Africa’s talented youth from passive users of technology – to active makers of technology.

Since the video release of Kelvin Doe’s story (the self-taught 15-Year-Old engineering whiz kid from Sierra Leone), on YouTube just a few weeks ago, the video has since received over 3.5 million views.

Kelvin’s inspirational story has attracted media attention around the world, from England to Vietnam, from Peru to Hong Kong.

Kelvin and many other talented young inventors, attended the Summer Innovation Camp in Sierra Leone last summer. The project is lead and co-founded by fellow Sierra Leonean David Sengeh, a PHD student at M.I.T Media Lab in Massachusetts, USA. David arranged for Kelvin to be sponsored by M.I.T to visit the prestigious University for a 3 week visiting practitioner’s programme, which has made Kelvin the youngest person in the project’s history to attend.

To-date Innovate Salone has raised just over $40,000 of its $100,000 goal on Crowdrise – as a result of the exposure of the YouTube video. In the video Kelvin mentions, his next invention will be “a windmill for people to use for electricity supply in his community”. If you would like to be part of the future and foster innovation with young people like Kelvin, show your support by subscribing and donating to Innovate Salone

Innovate Salone needs to reach its goal of $100,000 by December 31st.

Imagine if every person in Africa saw the “Africa for Norway” video and this was the only information they ever got about Norway. What would they think about Norway?

If we say Africa, what do you think about? Hunger, poverty, crime or AIDS? No wonder, because in fundraising campaigns and media that’s mainly what you hear about.

The pictures we usually see in fundraisers are of poor African children. Hunger and poverty is ugly, and it calls for action. But while these images can engage people in the short term, we are concerned that many people simply give up because it seems like nothing is getting better. Africa should not just be something that people either give to, or give up on.

The truth is that there are many positive developments in African countries, and we want these to become known. We need to change the simplistic explanations of problems in Africa. We need to educate ourselves on the complex issues and get more focus on how western countries have a negative impact on Africa’s development. If we want to address the problems the world is facing we need to do it based on knowledge and respect.

You too can donate your radiator and spread some warmth! http://www.africafornorway.com/
